The chalice is one of the four classic altar tools, the vessel of the element of Water and, in many traditions, of the feminine and receptive principle. It holds the wine, water, or offering in ritual, and it is raised in the toast or the blessing that marks a rite. A chalice with a usable insert is a practical version of that: it can do the symbolic work and also actually hold a drink.

The Maiden, Mother, and Crone are the Triple Goddess of modern Pagan and Wiccan practice, the three faces of the feminine divine mapped to the waxing, full, and waning moon and to the stages of a life. It is worth knowing that this particular triad, as a unified three-in-one goddess, is largely a twentieth-century formulation, given its familiar shape by Robert Graves in 1948 and taken up widely by Wicca thereafter. The individual figures and the Celtic knotwork draw on older imagery, but the Maiden-Mother-Crone as a single system is modern. We would rather say that than imply an unbroken ancient lineage; the symbol is meaningful in living practice regardless of its age.

1. Cleanse it before first use. Smoke, moonlight, or a rinse of the insert; metal tolerates more than soft stone does.
2. Set it on the altar as the Water tool. In the west, or wherever your tradition places the chalice.
3. Fill the insert for rites. Wine, water, juice, or an offering, using the stainless insert for anything you will drink.
4. Raise it in the blessing. The toast, the cakes-and-wine, the offering to the Goddess, as your practice holds.
5. Wash the insert after. Lift it out and clean it properly; do not leave liquid standing in the metal.
