The five-point star is the craft's best-known emblem, read traditionally as the four elements crowned by spirit. Where it is drawn inside a circle it is called a pentacle, and the circle is understood to bind and contain; the ivy wreath here does much the same work, and there is nothing sinister about any of it, whatever the films have suggested.

Ivy is a good companion for it. The plant climbs, clings, and stays green through winter, which folk symbolism has long read for endurance and for bonds that hold. A patch is not a talisman, and we would rather not sell it as one; what it is, is a way of wearing the emblem where people can see it, which has its own quiet significance.

1. Choose the spot: a jacket, a bag, a hat, or an altar cloth.
2. Iron or sew it on, following the care instructions for the fabric underneath.
3. Wear it where you like it seen, or set it on the altar as a cloth motif.
4. Wash the garment gently and inside out to keep the embroidery crisp.

What does the five-point star mean?

The four elements crowned by spirit, in the traditional reading. Drawn within a circle it is a pentacle, and the circle binds and contains. It is a symbol of balance and protection.

How do I attach it?

Iron or sew it onto the fabric, following the care instructions for the garment underneath. Sewing is the more durable option on anything that gets washed often.

Does it need cleansing?

No. It is an embroidered patch. Do not put salt on it.

Yes, gently and inside out, which keeps the embroidery from fraying.
