Few stones carry a deeper human history. The mines at Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan, in present-day Afghanistan, have produced lapis for more than six thousand years, feeding it along trade routes to Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and eventually Greece and Rome. In Egypt it was ground for the eye paint of royalty and inlaid into the burial mask of Tutankhamun; the Egyptians called it chesbet and set it among their most sacred materials. Crushed and refined, it became ultramarine, the pigment medieval and Renaissance painters paid more than its weight in gold to lay on the robes of the divine. The Persian and Arabic lazaward is where the word azure comes from.

How do I tell natural lapis from dyed material?

Natural lapis shows gold or brassy pyrite flecks, irregular white calcite veining, and variation in the blue across the stone. Dyed howlite or jasper, the common substitutes, tend to look uniformly blue without pyrite, or carry flecks that read as painted rather than embedded.

Is lapis water-safe?

Not really. A brief rinse is tolerated, but prolonged soaking damages the calcite in the matrix and can rust the pyrite. Cleanse with smoke, moonlight, or sound instead, and dry it thoroughly if it does get wet.
