The circle is the oldest working there is: you mark a space, you say what it is for, and for as long as it holds, what happens inside it is set apart from the rest of the day. The four quarters are the standard Western arrangement, each with its element and its direction, and calling them is how you build the boundary.

A word about the sage. White sage, Salvia apiana, is native to Southern California and Baja and has been used ceremonially by the Chumash, Cahuilla, and other Indigenous peoples for generations. Its popularity in the spiritual market has created real conservation pressure and real questions about appropriation, and those traditions belong to those communities. Burn it thoughtfully and sparingly, or substitute another clearing herb; the circle does not depend on it.

1. Clear the space. Light the sage over a heat-safe dish, blow it to a smolder, and move the smoke through the room.
2. East, Air. Set the Air candle in the east and light it, inviting Air to witness and guard the circle.
3. South, Fire. Move to the south, light the Fire candle, and call Fire.
4. West, Water. Then the west, and Water.
5. North, Earth. Close the round in the north with Earth, and the circle is cast. Close it in reverse when you are done, and never leave a flame unattended.

Do I have to use the sage?

No. White sage is ceremonial to several Indigenous North American peoples and is under harvesting pressure. Burn it thoughtfully or substitute another clearing herb; the circle does not depend on it.

How do I close the circle?

In reverse: thank and release each quarter in the opposite order, and extinguish the candles.
