The Spiritual Significance

Copal is one of the great sacred incenses, its name from the Nahuatl copalli, meaning incense, burned in Mesoamerican ceremony for thousands of years as an offering and a carrier of prayer. Its bright, fresh, resinous smoke is reached for to purify and cleanse a person or place, to consecrate tools and space, and in some traditions to make contact with other planes and to bless and protect. Scott Cunningham places copal under the Sun and the element of Fire, counting it among the classic purifying resins, where it can stand in for frankincense. As a loose resin it burns on charcoal, so you control how much smoke you raise. The incense does not act on its own; it cleanses and lifts the air and helps you settle into your own intention. Burn a piece to purify a space, consecrate a tool, or make an offering. As with all sacred plant traditions, it is worth burning copal with awareness of and respect for the cultures that have carried it.

How To Use

  1. Light a charcoal disc. Hold a charcoal tablet with tongs and light its edge until it sparks across and begins to ash over, then set it in a heat-safe censer or burner half-filled with sand or ash.
  2. Add a piece of copal. Once the charcoal glows, set a small piece of the resin on top and let the bright, fresh smoke rise.
  3. Set your intention. As the smoke fills the space, name what you are purifying, consecrating, or offering, and add another piece as needed.
  4. Burn it safely. Use a heat-safe burner on a protected surface, keep tongs handy, burn in a ventilated space away from anything flammable, and never leave burning charcoal or incense unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need charcoal to burn copal resin?

Yes. Like all loose resins, copal will not light on its own. Set a small piece on a glowing charcoal tablet in a heat-safe censer, and the heat releases the smoke.

What does copal smell like?

Bright, fresh, slightly piney and resinous, lighter and crisper than deep resins like myrrh, with a clean, uplifting smoke that reads instantly as sacred.

What is it used for?

Purification, consecration, and offering, cleansing a person or space, blessing and protecting it, and in some traditions making contact with other planes.

Why do the pieces vary in size?

Copal is sold by weight, not particle size, so each bag holds a natural mix from larger chunks down to pebbles and dust. Store it sealed away from heat and moisture.

How do I burn it safely?

Use a heat-safe burner with sand or ash on a protected surface, handle hot charcoal with tongs, burn in a ventilated space away from anything flammable, and never leave it unattended.
