Stromatolites are the fossil record's elders. The living mats that build them, layer by patient layer, reach back on the order of three and a half billion years, which makes a stromatolite the closest thing the crystal shelf has to a handshake with the beginning of life. The tradition works fossils for grounding, patience, and the long view, and stromatolite sits at the deep end of that register: Earth element, the root of the root. Held or carried, it is a stone for remembering how much time there is and how slowly good things are built. The stone does not act on its own; the patience is yours, and the fossil is very good company for it.
