Spiritualist-Approved Instructions & Product Info ✅

Baphomet as most people picture it, winged, goat-headed, androgynous, seated with one hand raised and one lowered, was created in 1854 by the French occultist Éliphas Lévi, who called it the Sabbatic Goat and described it as a philosophical diagram rather than a deity or anything evil. Every element is a deliberate symbol: the torch of universal intelligence between the horns, the caduceus of nature's generative force, the androgynous body uniting opposites, and the raised and lowered arms of the Hermetic axiom as above, so below.

This 8 1/4-inch square cast-resin plaque brings that symbolic figure to the wall or altar, with a reinforced metal inset hanger for secure display.

Please note: this item cannot ship to Massachusetts or California. See the California Prop 65 warning in Product Details.

The Spiritual Significance

For practitioners of Western ceremonial magic, Thelema, and the Left Hand Path, Baphomet is a symbol of equilibrium: the reconciliation of opposites, the Hermetic unity of above and below, and the integration of masculine and feminine into a single whole. In Lévi's original program the figure synthesizes rather than polarizes, picturing the idea that what appears dualistic is, at its deepest level, one.

As a wall plaque, Baphomet presides over a space rather than occupying altar surface, a fitting focal image for a room dedicated to ceremonial or esoteric work. In Crowley's Thelemic system, which drew on Lévi, the figure also represents initiation and the integration of the shadow. Know both the original esoteric meaning and the later Satanic association, and choose your own context with open eyes.

How To Use

  1. Hang the plaque by its reinforced hanger on a wall in your ritual space, or stand it on an altar.
  2. Cleanse it with incense or your preferred method and set your intention or dedication.
  3. Use it as a focal point for meditations on duality, shadow work, or initiation.
  4. For devotional work, set offerings beneath it: incense, candles, or written petitions.
  5. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or prolonged water exposure.

Pairs Well With

History & Occult Background

The word Baphomet predates Lévi by centuries, first appearing in a 1098 Crusader letter as an apparent garbling of the name of Mohammed, and again in the 14th-century Templar trials, where an idol called Baphomet was alleged under torture but never produced, a charge historians read as political fabrication. Éliphas Lévi (1810 to 1875) created the familiar image in 1854, deliberately combining the Goat of Mendes and Pan with Hermetic, Kabbalistic, and alchemical symbolism to represent esoteric wisdom and the reconciliation of opposites, explicitly not evil. The Satanic association came only with the Church of Satan in the 1960s and is distinct from Lévi's meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Satanic?

Lévi's 1854 figure was not; he designed it as a symbol of esoteric balance. The Satanic association came later through the Church of Satan. Both meanings exist, and practitioners work within their own context.

Why can't it ship to Massachusetts or California?

It carries a California Prop 65 warning for chemical exposure, and Massachusetts has separate restrictions. Plentiful Earth cannot fulfill orders to these two states.

Can it stand on an altar instead of hanging?

Yes. While it has a reinforced hanger for the wall, the square plaque can also be propped or stood on an altar surface.

How do I hang it securely?

Use the reinforced metal inset hanger with a wall fixing suited to the plaque's cast-resin weight and your wall type.

How do I care for it?

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or prolonged water exposure, which can affect the finish.
