The smudge pot is the cauldron family's controlled burner: where the open vessel takes petitions and quick flames, the lidded pot is built for the long smolder, a charcoal disc under a resin pinch, a rolled herb bundle laid to smoke, the lid softening the burn and shaping the plume. Practitioners keep one for cleansing burns and slow incense work precisely because the iron and the lid together make the smolder patient and the altar safe. The pot does no clearing alone; it manages the fire while your intention does the work, which is the honest division of labor every burning ritual runs on.

• Cone incense: Set the cone on a little sand so the base doesn't scorch the iron.
• Resin or loose incense: Add half an inch of sand, set a lit charcoal tablet on it, and sprinkle resin a pinch at a time.
• A wish or a release: Burn a written petition, a bay leaf or a name you're letting go, at the new or full moon or whenever you need to.
• A candle in sand: Stand a chime candle upright in sand. Some households light it to stand for the fire of creation.
• Watching a spell come together: Add each ingredient in order and picture the working forming as you go.
