An oil burner is the quietest way to scent a room. A shallow dish sits above a tealight; you add a little water and a few drops of oil, and the gentle heat carries the fragrance into the air with no smoke at all, which makes it the right choice for small spaces, shared homes, and anyone sensitive to incense. It is also one of the oldest methods there is, the same principle as a perfume lamp from antiquity. How Do I Use an Oil Burner?

Fill the dish about two-thirds with water, add five to ten drops of essential or fragrance oil, and light an unscented tealight underneath. Top up the water before it runs dry, since an empty dish can scorch the oil and crack the burner. Let it cool completely before cleaning, then wipe the dish with a little rubbing alcohol to remove residue before changing scents. Never leave a lit burner unattended, and keep it out of reach of pets and children.
