Amber is the one stone on the shelf that was once alive. It is fossilized tree resin, tens of millions of years old, warm in the hand when every other stone is cold and light enough to float in salt water, and it has been worn as a charm since the Stone Age: the sun's stone in Greek, Norse, and Baltic story, carried for luck and protection along the Amber Road before Rome existed. Practitioners keep it for warmth through the cold season, for luck, for grounding that warms rather than stills, and for ancestor work, since it is the stone that holds a moment inside it. It is soft, 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale, and it scorches, so it lives on a cord under the shirt and away from candles.
