The Mother Rune of the design is the composite figure rune students know as the stacked form from which the alphabet's strokes can be drawn, set here at the center with the letters wheeling around it, the whole futhark legible at a glance from any seat at the table. The triquetra, the three-looped knot of Insular art that later traditions read for triplicities of many kinds, holds each corner. As a casting cloth the layout earns its keep, the ring giving thrown lots a field with a center. The cloth mothers nothing on its own, as we say plainly of printed textiles; it lays a whole alphabet's worth of old letters where the reading happens.
